CVT judder at 20–40 km/h? Here's what's actually wrong

by Scooter Narcotics on Jul 16, 2026

Every week someone rolls into our workshop at Jalan Lam Huat and says the same thing: “It shakes when I pull off, but my friend says that's normal for scooters.” It isn't. Judder — that shudder or vibration between roughly 20 and 40 km/h, especially from a standstill — is the most common CVT fault we see in Singapore, and it always has a cause.

The usual suspects, in order

1. Glazed or contaminated clutch shoes

The number one cause. Heat, dust and age glaze the friction material on your clutch shoes; oil or grease contamination makes it worse. Instead of gripping the clutch bell smoothly, the shoes grab-release-grab — that's the shudder you feel. Light glazing can sometimes be deglazed; worn or contaminated shoes need replacing.

2. A worn or hardened drive belt

Singapore heat is brutal on belts. A belt that's cracked, glazed or below its minimum width doesn't seat properly in the pulleys and slips under load — judder, high revs, less top speed. If your belt hasn't been inspected in a year of daily riding, it's due.

3. Flattened rollers or worn slider guides

Rollers wear flat spots and stop rolling; the variator then moves in steps instead of smoothly. You feel it as hesitation and vibration under acceleration.

4. A scored or out-of-round clutch bell

A glazed clutch usually takes the bell with it. Bluing, scoring or an out-of-round bell means the fix won't last unless the bell is machined or replaced too.

Why you shouldn't ride it out

Judder is the cheap warning stage. Ignore it and the belt keeps slipping, heat builds, and one day the belt lets go — which can destroy the variator and leave you stranded on the PIE. A CVT service costs a fraction of that tow-plus-rebuild bill.

How we fix it properly

We strip the whole CVT, not just the part that's crying loudest: belt measured against spec, rollers and sliders checked, clutch shoes and bell inspected together, torque spring checked, everything cleaned and reassembled with the correct grease in the right places (and none where it doesn't belong). Then a road test. That's why our fix lasts — details on our CVT servicing page.
